Five people were killed, and 13 others were rescued after a seven-storey building collapsed in Bengaluru's Hennur area on Tuesday evening. Rescue operations are still underway, with officials fearing that two to three more individuals remain trapped under the rubble.
The incident occurred in Babusapalya amid heavy rains, though initial investigations suggest that substandard construction materials and safety violations were the main causes, not the weather. Sources reported that the building had clearance for only four floors, but illegal construction continued up to seven.

Investigations revealed that thinner-than-required pillar rods were used in the structure, with 18-20 mm rods used where 28-30 mm was needed, compromising its integrity. Additionally, there were allegations of improper cement-to-sand ratios in the construction.
CCTV footage captured the collapse, and survivors recalled that around 21 workers, including tile setters and plumbers, were inside at the time. Ahmed, a tile worker who was rescued, stated the building’s basement appeared weak.
Four injured victims were taken to Bengaluru North Hospital, while five others were shifted to Hosmat Hospital. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar confirmed the casualty figures and promised strict action against those responsible for the construction violations.
The city has been grappling with severe rain and flooding, further complicating rescue efforts.
