A tragic road accident in the early hours of Friday claimed the lives of five people, including two young children, near Gottipura Gate in Hoskote taluk, Bengaluru Rural district. The mishap occurred around 2 am on the Kolar-Bengaluru highway when an Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) bus collided with a truck transporting iron rods.

Initial investigations indicate that the APSRTC bus driver, allegedly drowsy and attempting a risky overtake, lost control and rammed into the truck from behind. The bus, en route from Tirupati to Bengaluru with about 30 passengers onboard, suffered a devastating impact—its right side and roof were torn apart, causing severe injuries to passengers seated on that side.

The deceased were identified as two children, a BTech student, a labourer from Chittoor district, and a Bengaluru resident. Sixteen others sustained injuries, two of whom, including the driver and a 37-year-old woman, remain in critical condition at a Hoskote hospital.

Emergency services arrived within 20 minutes of the crash. The truck driver, reportedly unharmed, initially fled the scene but later reported to authorities. Police have ruled out alcohol consumption in both drivers and registered a case at the Hoskote traffic police station.

The wrecked vehicles were cleared with assistance from bystanders. Postmortem examinations were conducted at a government hospital before the bodies were handed over to families.
