A tattoo artist in Bengaluru, Ritesh Aghariya, is facing legal trouble after posting a photo on Instagram that featured a person with a tattoo offensive to law enforcement. The controversial tattoo quickly drew attention online, with several individuals flagging the photo to the Bengaluru Police’s X (formerly Twitter) handle. This prompted the Cubbon Park division to register a suo motu case against the artist.

Acting on the social media complaints and with the magistrate court’s permission, the Bengaluru Police filed a formal complaint against Aghariya. The FIR specifically mentions an X handle, TilakSadive, which urged the Bengaluru City Police to “have a look” at the offensive tattoo.

Aghariya admitted to uploading the photo and explained that a foreign national had visited his shop and got the tattoo. The artist now faces charges under Section 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace.

This case underscores the increasing scrutiny of social media content and the legal ramifications of offensive messages. It highlights the need for artists to consider the broader impact of their work, especially when it intersects with public sentiment and legal boundaries.

As the investigation continues, Bengaluru Police remain vigilant, monitoring reactions and complaints on social media to maintain public order and address potential provocations.
