In response to growing traffic congestion in Indian cities, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is exploring futuristic mobility solutions — including the introduction of flying buses. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari recently confirmed that the central government is conducting research on the feasibility of this mode of transport, with studies already underway in cities like Delhi and Bengaluru.

Speaking as the Modi government marked 11 years in power, Gadkari highlighted the Centre’s ongoing efforts to address the urban traffic crisis. He noted that one major contributing factor to congestion is the increasing migration from rural areas to cities. In this context, innovative transport solutions such as flying buses are being considered to ease pressure on existing infrastructure.

Specifically, the ministry is studying a corridor between Dhaula Kuan and Manesar in Delhi and a potential pilot in Bengaluru, where the city's notorious traffic jams are affecting productivity and mobility. Gadkari emphasized that such futuristic transit options, if proven viable, could redefine urban transportation.

He also listed key infrastructure achievements, including the completed Bengaluru-Mysuru Green Expressway and the ongoing Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway project.

However, when questioned about the recent stampede outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium that resulted in multiple deaths, Gadkari declined to comment, stating that law and order falls under the jurisdiction of state governments. He called for a proper investigation into the tragedy.

The study on flying buses signals the Centre’s growing interest in integrating cutting-edge transport technologies into India’s expanding urban landscape.
