An air hostess was arrested at Kannur Airport for allegedly smuggling gold, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) reported on Friday. Surabhi Khatun, a cabin crew member for Air India Express, was found concealing approximately 960 grams of gold in her rectum. The incident occurred following the arrival of a flight from Muscat on May 28.

DRI officials, acting on intelligence, intercepted Khatun upon her arrival. A thorough search revealed the concealed gold, leading to its immediate seizure. Khatun, who had reportedly smuggled gold multiple times in the past, was subsequently produced before a magistrate and remanded to 14 days in custody.
This arrest highlights the ongoing issue of gold smuggling through air travel, with smugglers resorting to increasingly desperate measures to evade detection. The DRI has intensified its efforts to curb such activities, employing advanced screening techniques and increased surveillance at airports.
Air India Express has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident. The airline is expected to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation. This case underscores the significant risks and legal consequences associated with gold smuggling, a lucrative but illegal trade driven by high domestic gold prices and import restrictions in India.
Authorities continue to monitor and crack down on such smuggling operations, aiming to deter future offenses and maintain the integrity of airport security protocols.
