Mohamad Shami may contest LS elections on a BJP ticket

Sources say he was approached by the BJP leadership

He represents West Bengal in the Ranji trophy

Star cricketer Mohammad Shami from Bengal is being considered by the BJP for nomination in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Shami, who plays for Bengal in  Ranji Trophy, has been approached by BJP leaders. However, he is yet to decide on the offer. Currently recovering from surgery, Shami’s remarkable performance in India’s ODI World Cup campaign, where he secured 24 wickets in seven matches, earned him praise from PM Modi, who embraced him in a viral video.

Shami’s meetings with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and promises from Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath for a cricket stadium in his village have added to the buzz around his potential candidacy.

BJP insiders suggest that nominating Shami, particularly in the Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency, could strengthen the party’s prospects, particularly in minority areas. This decision gains significance amid tensions in Sandeshkhali village within Basirhat’s jurisdiction. Discussions within the BJP regarding Shami’s candidacy reflect the party’s strategic approach to the upcoming West Bengal elections.
