Dr. Vijayalakshmi Deshmane’s journey from a struggling childhood to becoming a Padma Shri-winning oncologist is a testament to resilience and dedication. Born in a marginalized community in Kalaburagi, she grew up watching her mother sell fruits and vegetables on the roadside. Despite financial hardships, her parents prioritized education, with her mother even pawning her mangalsutra to fund Vijayalakshmi’s medical admission.

With unwavering determination, she stepped into Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology in 1985, becoming its first female resident, surgeon, head, and later, in-charge director. She broke barriers in a male-dominated field, leading advancements in cancer care. Her contributions extend beyond hospitals—she has represented India internationally and authored several articles on cancer awareness.

As Vice President of the Karnataka Cancer Society, she has dedicated her life to treating underprivileged cancer patients with compassion.
