The Karnataka Cabinet has officially approved the renaming of Ramanagara district to Bengaluru South District. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced that the name change would be formalized through a government notification, expected to be issued today itself. Ramanagara will continue as the district headquarters under its new identity.

DK Shivakumar clarified that this renaming would not incur any additional expenditure and that no administrative or jurisdictional changes will follow the name update. He also emphasized that the decision was made in accordance with legal procedures, and it aligns with the city's growth and prominence on the global stage.
Historically, Ramanagara, along with Kanakapura and Channapatna, was once part of Bengaluru district. Shivakumar, who once served as a Zilla Panchayat member for Bengaluru, stated that the intention behind the renaming is to retain "Bengaluru" in the district's identity, given its rapid development and global recognition.
He reiterated that the proposal was sent to the Centre only for formality, as the renaming authority lies with the state. No changes will occur on the ground, the region’s administration, boundaries, and governance will remain exactly as they are now.
