In the wake of a tragic incident in Halifax, Canada, a fundraiser organized by the Maritime Sikh Society for the family of Gursimran Kaur, a 19-year-old Indian-origin Walmart employee, has gained significant momentum, raising over ₹1.1 crore (CAD 194,309) to support her family during this difficult time. The initial goal of CAD 50,000 was quickly exceeded as the community rallied to assist the grieving family after the heartbreaking loss of their daughter.

Gursimran was found dead in a walk-in oven at the Walmart where she worked alongside her mother. Concern for her well-being grew when her mother noticed Gursimran hadn’t been seen on the sales floor for more than an hour. Despite asking her colleagues about her daughter’s whereabouts, many assumed she was simply busy helping customers.
Repeated attempts to contact Gursimran went unanswered, leading to mounting anxiety. The situation escalated when her mother was informed of a “leakage” coming from the oven. Upon investigation, she discovered her daughter inside, prompting a wave of shock and sorrow throughout the community.
The fundraiser, which emphasizes the unimaginable suffering faced by Gursimran’s family, serves as a testament to the solidarity and compassion of the community, uniting to support a family navigating an unfathomable tragedy.
