Bengaluru, often called the Garden City, is now staring at a potential garbage crisis as pourakarmikas, waste collection auto drivers, and lorry workers have announced an indefinite strike starting tomorrow. The move is likely to disrupt door-to-door garbage collection across the city, raising concerns over sanitation and public health.

The workers have called for a protest at Freedom Park, demanding regularisation of jobs and direct payment of salaries from the BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike). They allege that despite multiple assurances from the government, including a public promise by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, their demands remain unfulfilled.
Around six to seven months ago, the same group had staged a protest demanding job regularisation. At the time, the state government had assured them that their concerns would be addressed. However, the delay in action has left the workers disillusioned and frustrated.
Their key demands include:
- Conversion of contract-based jobs into permanent roles
- Monthly salaries to be paid directly by the BBMP
- Timely disbursal of wages and job security
The strike is expected to significantly affect garbage collection and waste management across residential areas. Citizens may have to brace for overflowing bins and unhygienic surroundings if a quick resolution is not reached.
