Formation and Mission
The Garud Commando Force was established in September 2004, amid rising attacks on Air Force installations in Kashmir. Their primary objective is to safeguard Air Force assets. Over time, their role expanded to include security, intelligence gathering, and specialized combat operations across diverse terrains.
Tough Selection Process
Selection into the Garud Commando Force is highly competitive. Non-commissioned candidates (Airmen) are chosen through the general Air Force recruitment process, involving rigorous physical, psychological, and interview assessments. Notably, candidates get no second attempt if they fail. For officer-level entries, aspirants must clear the Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) and undergo specialized training at the Air Force Academy, Hyderabad, focusing on leadership and strategic skills.
Grueling Training Regimen
Garud training is among the toughest in the Indian armed forces. It covers physical endurance, mental resilience, advanced weapon handling, skydiving, jungle and urban warfare, and tactical operations. Only the mentally and physically toughest complete the program.
Salary and Perks
Garud commandos are well-compensated for their high-risk duties. Starting salaries are reported around ₹70,000 per month, while senior commandos can earn up to ₹2.5 lakh. In addition to their basic pay, they receive duty allowances, high-risk bonuses, and special operation incentives based on their role and experience.
