  • Sunil Gavaskar says India should have a new captain for Aus series
  • Rohit may not play the first two tests
  • Finch says personal commitments also matter

Former Australia captain Aaron Finch has responded to Sunil Gavaskar’s suggestion about India’s captaincy for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar series, which starts on November 22 in Australia. Reports indicate that Rohit Sharma, India’s Test captain, may miss the first game and potentially the second due to personal commitments. In light of this, Gavaskar had proposed that India should appoint a captain for the entire series if Rohit is unavailable for multiple matches, emphasizing the need for leadership continuity following India's 3-0 series loss to New Zealand.

Gavaskar’s recommendation aims to ensure stability and unity within the Indian team for the duration of the high-profile Test series. He suggested that if Rohit is absent, a permanent captain should lead the team throughout the series rather than handling changes mid-tour.

However, Aaron Finch expressed a differing view, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing personal commitments in Rohit’s case. “I disagree with Sunny on that totally. Rohit Sharma is the captain of the Indian cricket team. If you need to stay at home because your wife is having a baby... that's such a beautiful moment... and you take all the time that you need in that regard," Finch told ESPNcricinfo.

Finch’s support underscores the significance of family commitments while acknowledging Rohit’s role as India’s captain. The issue has sparked discussions on leadership strategy ahead of the crucial series.
