The Golden Chariot, South India’s only luxury train, has been reintroduced to provide an opulent travel experience. Managed by IRCTC, the train caters to travelers, especially during the festive season when demand surges. Initially conceived in 2002, the project was a collaboration between the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC), the Tourism Ministry, and Indian Railways. Inspired by Rajasthan’s Palace on Wheels, it highlights Karnataka’s rich art, culture, and natural beauty.

The train’s interiors were designed by the Integral Coach Factory over four months, drawing inspiration from Karnataka’s historical reigns of the Hoysala, Vijayanagara, and Chalukya kingdoms. Its 18 luxurious coaches reflect the architectural grandeur of these dynasties. Ownership is shared among Indian Railways (50%), the Ministry of Tourism (25%), and the Government of Karnataka (25%).
Though operational earlier, the train had been stalled but is now fully functional again. It offers travelers a unique opportunity to explore Karnataka’s heritage and scenic landscapes while enjoying unparalleled luxury. The Golden Chariot is poised to attract both domestic and international tourists, further boosting Karnataka’s tourism sector and preserving its cultural legacy. This reintroduction is set to reaffirm its status as a premier luxury travel experience in India.
