The system uses a combined network of the 2 billion plus android phones

Phones are capable of detecting speed and vibrations of the earth’s movements

Google is collaborating with NDMA and NSC

In a combined effort with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the National Seismology Center (NSC), Google has expanded its Android Earthquake Alerts System into India.

Google made an announcement pertaining to this on 27th September. “Today, in consultation with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the National Seismology Center (NSC), we’re introducing the Android Earthquake Alerts System in India. Through this launch, we strive to provide Android users automatic early warning alerts when there is an earthquake in their area,” Google said in a blog.

The system uses a combined network of the 2 billion plus android phones to function as a mini version of a seismometer to create a connected system for earthquake detection. They are capable of detecting speed and vibrations of the earth’s movements and flag movements that are in excess and hover around the danger zone.

In India, we have been working closely with the NDMA to provide users with helpful safety information about natural disasters such as floods and cyclones on Google Search and Maps. We’re proud to further our association with the NDMA, along with the NSC, to bring the Android Earthquake Alerts system to India,” the blog added.
