The central government has introduced significant changes to Aadhaar authentication rules, impacting private companies seeking access to citizens’ Aadhaar details.
Aadhaar, the 12-digit unique identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), is the country’s primary identity document. It includes key personal details such as name, age, address, mobile number, and biometric data like fingerprints.

In a recent notification, the government has permitted private entities to access Aadhaar authentication, but with strict conditions. Any organization outside government ministries or departments must provide a valid reason to UIDAI for requesting Aadhaar verification. The proposal must clearly outline the purpose and demonstrate how it benefits the public.
The notification emphasizes that private institutions must justify their need for Aadhaar authentication, ensuring transparency and compliance with established rules. Approval will only be granted if UIDAI finds the request legitimate and beneficial to citizens. Additionally, the details provided by private companies must be acceptable to the public.
The government has also made it clear that Aadhaar access will not be granted if concerns arise regarding misuse or data security. This move aims to regulate private sector involvement while safeguarding citizens' data.
The updated rules reinforce Aadhaar’s role as a crucial identity document while maintaining stringent oversight on its usage by private organizations.
