The central government has issued a strict advisory to OTT platforms and online content publishers, urging compliance with the ethics code under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. The move follows the Supreme Court's recent push for regulating obscene content on YouTube, citing misuse of online platforms due to the lack of stringent oversight.

The controversy erupted after influencer Ranveer Allahbadia made an inappropriate remark on comedian Samay Raina’s YouTube show, India’s Got Latent. The remark sparked nationwide backlash, prompting the removal of the show from YouTube. Multiple FIRs were lodged against Allahbadia in Mumbai, Assam, and Jaipur, while authorities reported that he remained out of contact.

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting confirmed receiving complaints from MPs, statutory bodies, and the public about the alleged spread of vulgar, obscene, and pornographic content on OTT platforms and social media. The advisory mandates strict adherence to legal provisions, prohibiting any content violating India’s laws.

The Supreme Court, while reviewing the case, underscored the urgent need for regulation, highlighting concerns about online content crossing ethical boundaries. The government’s action signals a tougher stance on digital content governance, reinforcing the responsibility of platforms to ensure compliance with established norms while balancing creative freedom.
