  • Central govt has announced new rules for AC usage across nation
  • Temperature settings should range only between 20°C and 28°C
  • Move aims to cut energy consumption and reduce pressure on power grid

In a major move to curb electricity consumption and promote sustainable energy use, the central government has announced new rules for air conditioner (AC) usage across the country. The new regulation, which applies to both new and existing AC units, mandates that the temperature settings should range only between 20°C and 28°C.

Currently, ACs in India operate with a wider temperature range of 18°C to 30°C. However, under the new rule, cooling below 20°C or heating above 28°C will not be permitted in homes and commercial buildings.

Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal Khattar, stated that setting ACs at excessively low temperatures leads to higher electricity usage. The initiative aims to cut energy consumption and reduce the pressure on the power grid, especially during peak summer months.

Reportedly according to senior official from the Department of Energy and Housing, ACs account for 20% of India’s electricity demand, consuming approximately 50 gigawatts. Studies show that raising AC temperature by just 1°C can lead to a 6% reduction in electricity usage.

With AC usage rapidly increasing in urban areas, the new standard will help reduce pollution and support sustainable energy goals. Manufacturers are also expected to align production with these norms, and implementation will be closely monitored by the government in the coming months.
