Marking a major administrative overhaul, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will officially cease to exist today, paving the way for the newly formed Greater Bangalore Authority (GBA). This change signifies the end of an era in Bengaluru’s civic governance and the beginning of a broader, more regionally integrated administrative structure.
BBMP to GBA: What Changes
From May 15, the capital city will operate under the Greater Bangalore Authority. The current BBMP jurisdiction of 709 sq km is expected to expand up to 1,000 sq km, bringing several surrounding regions under a unified governance structure. Bengaluru will now be administered through three new municipal corporations, each with 125 wards.
The GBA aims to improve administrative efficiency and urban planning by dividing the city into Bangalore Central Municipal Corporation, Northern Nagar Palika, and Southern Nagar Palika.
Expanded Areas and Governance
The Chief Minister will serve as Chairman of the GBA, with the Bangalore Development Minister as Vice Chairman. Newly added areas include Electronic City, Attibele, Jigani, Sarjapur, Bagalur, Rajanukunte, Hesaraghatta, Dasanapura, Makali, and Harohalli, among others.
With this expansion, changes in building regulations are expected—proposals suggest a 50% reduction in setback requirements for residential buildings and 25% for commercial structures.
This major shift redefines Bengaluru’s civic landscape, aiming for better urban integration and service delivery.
