In a landmark move to decentralize governance and improve civic administration, the Karnataka government has issued an official notification announcing the establishment of five new municipal corporations under the Greater Bengaluru Area (GBA). This move marks the end of the existing Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which will be dissolved by August 10.

Initially, the government had hinted at setting up just three city corporations, but after further consultations and urban planning assessments, the decision was expanded to five. With this, the sprawling metropolis will now be reorganized into the following five city municipalities:

  • Bengaluru South City Corporation
  • Bengaluru North City Corporation
  • Bengaluru Central City Corporation
  • Bengaluru West City Corporation
  • Bengaluru East City Corporation

These new entities will function under the umbrella of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), replacing BBMP. A formal order demarcating the boundaries of each of the five municipal corporations has also been issued, and the current BBMP headquarters will be converted into the central office of the GBA.

The state government is racing against the clock to ensure that the transition is completed before the upcoming monsoon session of the legislature, which begins on August 11. A dedicated bill concerning the new structure and borders of the corporations is expected to be introduced and passed during this session. This transformation is being hailed as a critical step toward bringing better urban governance, more localized accountability, and improved delivery of civic services.
