The GST Council’s clarification on popcorn taxation has sparked a lively meme fest online, with users humorously navigating the intricacies of tax classifications on different types of popcorn. At its 55th meeting, held on Saturday, the council confirmed that no changes had been made to existing GST rates on popcorn but elaborated on the rationale behind the tax structure.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman explained that caramelised popcorn, which contains added sugar, is classified as sugar confectionery and is taxed at a higher rate compared to salted or plain popcorn. The council highlighted that the differing preparation methods and characteristics of each type of popcorn dictate the applicable GST. A circular from the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) is expected soon to provide more detailed explanations.
