On June 13, 2025, Air India Flight 171, bound for London, crashed into a medical college hostel in Ahmedabad’s Meghani Nagar minutes after takeoff at 12:11 PM IST, claiming lives, including 241 passengers, 12 crew members, and 24 on the ground.A technical glitch reportedly severed the plane’s signal, causing it to collide with a building and erupt in flames.

Among the victims were Gujarati sisters Dheer and Heer Baksi, seated in 17J and 17H, who had traveled to India for their grandmother’s birthday celebration. The sisters, full of joy during the family festivity, left behind cherished memories before boarding the doomed flight.

The crash, India’s deadliest single-aircraft disaster, left the nation in shock. Emergency teams, numbering over 1,000, rushed to the site, recovering one black box to aid the ongoing investigation by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau. Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, the sole survivor, is under medical care. The tragedy also claimed former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the site, offering condolences and support to grieving families. The sisters’ loss has deeply affected their community, with tributes pouring in for their vibrant spirits.
