  • Today (July 27) is head and neck cancers day
  • Tobacco and alcohol consumption are leading causes
  • Technological advancement has helped treat them greatly

Consuming alcohol and tobacco can be dangerous in more ways than one. While most of us may know about lung cancer, knowledge about neck and head cancers is scanty. Again, the leading cause is the consumption of alcohol and tobacco.

Speaking to NewsFirst Prime, Dr Adoor Gurucharan, a senior neurologist says that of late, brain and neck cancers are on the rise.

He added, “Neurological presentations could be varied, ranging from simple headaches to seizure or paralysis. Rarely do these head and neck cancers present as a superficial swelling and hence any such symptoms warrant immediate medical attention.”

Technology has a great role to play in detection and alleviation of the disease. Sophistication in technology can go a long way in the treatment of such cancers.

He says, “With advancement in neurosurgical and Minimally invasive/Radiosurgeries, treatment of head and neck cancers has hit a new high with encouraging outcomes.”

One of the best ways to deal with such cancers is to create more awareness. Health education goes a long way in prevention and even early detection with the help of screening programmes.

Palliative care for the terminally ill also plays a crucial role.
