State Commission for Protection of Child Rights files suo motu complaint and writes to Drug Control Department, urging restriction on open sale of the canned drink near school and college areas.
Serious concerns have been raised in Karnataka over the sale of a canned beverage branded as “Buzz Ballz”, after reports claimed it contains 15% alcohol along with high sugar content. The issue has drawn the attention of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, which has taken suo motu cognisance of the matter.
According to the Commission, the drink is being marketed in a tin format and is reportedly available for sale in areas surrounding schools and colleges. The body has expressed strong concern that such easy access could expose children to alcohol without their knowledge.

What Are the Concerns?
Reports indicate that the beverage contains 15% alcohol. In addition, officials have pointed out that the drink also has a high sugar level. The combination of alcohol and excess sugar is seen as harmful, particularly for minors.
The Commission fears that children may unknowingly consume the product, believing it to be a regular juice drink. This, it says, could gradually push minors towards alcohol addiction without them being fully aware.
The body has warned that the drink may have serious consequences on children’s physical and mental health. Long-term exposure, especially at a young age, could impact overall development.

A formal complaint has also been registered at the Commission level seeking immediate regulatory action. Officials have requested the department to examine the product’s contents and ensure that children are protected from potential harm.
The matter is now under the attention of the concerned authorities for further action.
