The controversy erupted following a music concert in Bengaluru on April 22, where Nigam’s comments reportedly offended members of the Kannada community. In response, a complaint was filed by Dharmaraj A., President of the Bengaluru Urban District Unit of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, at the Avalahalli police station. The FIR was registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including charges related to criminal intimidation, intentional insult, and incitement to public mischief.
The Bengaluru police initially served Nigam a notice on May 3, requesting a response within seven days. A second summons was later issued after no reply was received. The incident gained traction after a video clip from the event circulated online, allegedly capturing the controversial remarks.
Amid the uproar, producers of the upcoming Kannada film Kuladalli Keelyavudo removed a track sung by Nigam, citing disappointment over his comments. Facing mounting criticism, the singer issued a public apology on social media, expressing remorse and affirming his respect for Karnataka.
