Karnataka is reeling under the impact of intense pre-monsoon showers that have returned after 16 years with such ferocity. The rains, arriving ahead of schedule, have triggered widespread disruptions across several districts, including Bengaluru, Chikkamagaluru, and coastal areas.
Bengaluru witnessed fresh spells of rain by evening on Saturday, following a day of overcast skies. Key city areas such as Town Hall, J.C. Road, KR Market, Lal Bagh, Shantinagar, and KG Road reported moderate rainfall. The Meteorological Department has forecast widespread rainfall across many districts and issued alerts for continued downpours.
Chikkamagaluru district has been among the worst affected. Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds have lashed regions including Kotigehara, Charmadi Ghat, Balur, Banakal, and Binnadi in Mudigere taluk. Roads in Kotigehara turned into rivers, causing panic among residents. Falling trees and electric poles have added to the chaos in rural areas.
In separate incidents in Mudigere, two cars met with accidents due to slippery roads and poor visibility. A car veered off the road and fell into the Hemavati canal on NH-173, while another overturned in Chakkamakki village. No casualties were reported, thanks to timely rescue efforts, including one by local social worker Arif, who used a rope to save trapped tourists.
Meanwhile, Udupi district is under a red alert for four days. Persistent rain and high sea activity have raised concerns, especially in low-lying areas. In Mangaluru, the Pumpwell road has been submerged, with water from the canal overflowing onto roads, severely affecting traffic and posing challenges for two-wheeler riders.
With the monsoon season off to an intense start, authorities have urged caution and preparedness across the state.
