Multiple Sikh organisations across India, including those in Punjab, Telangana, New Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh, are calling for a ban on the upcoming Bollywood film Emergency, starring Kangana Ranaut. The biographical political thriller focuses on former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the 21-month emergency period she imposed from 1975 to 1977.

The controversy erupted following the release of a 2.43-minute trailer on August 14, which has drawn over five million views but only 461 likes, reflecting widespread discontent. Sikh groups claim the film misrepresents their community and distorts historical facts, sparking concerns that it could incite communal tension.
The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has sent letters to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, urging them to halt the film’s release. The DSGMC alleges that the trailer contains content that misrepresents the Sikh community and could potentially incite hatred.
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has also issued a legal notice to Kangana Ranaut and the film’s producers, demanding the removal of the trailer, a public apology, and a ban on the film. Their primary objection is to a scene featuring late Khalistani separatist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, which they argue inaccurately portrays his demands.
