  • Coconut prices in Karnataka hit Rs 70-80 per kg, nearing Rs 100, doubling from Rs 30-40
  • Reduced production due to disease and shift to areca nut cultivation drives the hike
  • No price relief expected for nine months, impacting consumers and farmers alike

Coconut prices in Karnataka have soared to unprecedented levels, with 1 kg of coconuts now ranging between Rs 70-80, doubling from the earlier Rs 30-40 range. This dramatic rise, the highest in decades, has brought joy to coconut farmers but added a significant burden on common households. Pure coconut oil is priced at Rs 510 per litre, while a single tender coconut now costs Rs 70, marking a historic peak. Traders predict that prices could soon jump to Rs 100 per kg, with no relief expected for the next nine months due to persistent supply shortages.

The price hike stems from a sharp decline in coconut production across the state. Over the past few years, falling prices had left farmers struggling, prompting many to shift to areca nut cultivation. This transition has reduced coconut-growing areas, severely impacting output. Additionally, diseases affecting coconut trees have further hampered yields, while market supply fails to meet demand. The situation has created a ripple effect, driving up the cost of coconut-based products and straining consumers, especially during festive seasons when demand typically spikes.

Farmers, though relieved by the higher prices, face challenges as production struggles to keep pace. The reduced supply, coupled with increased demand for coconut oil and tender coconuts, has fueled the price surge. Experts warn that without intervention, such as improved disease management or incentives to revive coconut farming, the trend may persist.
