  • No alarm over HMPV, say Indian health officials
  • Hygiene and precautions key for respiratory infection control

Indian health officials have urged the public to remain calm amid reports of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) spreading in China. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has emphasized that HMPV is similar to other respiratory viruses, causing mild symptoms like the common cold in most cases, though it can lead to flu-like conditions in vulnerable groups such as the elderly and young children.

There is no specific antiviral treatment for HMPV, making prevention crucial. General precautions like maintaining hygiene, using personal towels or handkerchiefs, and avoiding close contact when experiencing symptoms are recommended to limit its spread.

Authorities have reported no unusual rise in respiratory infections within India for December 2024. Hospitals remain equipped to handle the routine increase in respiratory illnesses seen during winter.

The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is closely monitoring respiratory infections and is in communication with global health agencies to assess the situation.
