The 4 episode documentary “Hunt for Veerappan” released on Netflix on the 4th of August. It traced the timeline of the bandit, Veerappan’s operations in jungles on the border of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and the efforts taken by the police officials of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and the forest department to apprehend him.
The documentary also extensively showcased the ordeal when Veerapppan had kidnapped the greatest icon of Kannada cinema, Dr Rajkumar.
When Veerapan had kidnapped Dr. Rajkumar, he had placed a set of demands. These included setting a minimum wage for tea estate workers in the states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and the revocation of TADA (Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act) on villagers whose trail was pending for more than 6 years over allegations of aiding Veerapan’s smuggling operations.
This had gotten a section of the social media, portraying Veerappan as a Robin Hood like figure who took the state for a just cause. This was however thoroughly contested by others who pointed out that what had eventually led to the release of Dr Rajkumar was a huge transaction of Rs 10 crore. The fact that the documentary did not talk about the circumstance surrounding H. Nagappa JD(U) (Janata Dal United) leader who was kidnapped by Veerappan was also not well received.
Minimum wages for tea estate workers in TN & KA, compensation for families of 9 killed SC/STs and Cauvery riot' victims, Thiruvalluvar statue in KA, protection for Tamilians in KA.
