    Bengaluru hosts about 13 prominent philanthropists who donate in crores

Bengaluru boasts the third highest concentration of philanthropists as per Hurun’s 2023 report. Notable individuals from Bengaluru such as Wipro’s Azim Premji, Zerodha’s Nithin Kamath, and Biocon’s Kiran Mazumdar Shaw have secured spots on the esteemed Hurun’s top Philanthropist List.

Accounting for 11 percent of the philanthropic presence on the list, Bengaluru hosts about 13 prominent philanthropists. In comparison, Mumbai claims the top spot with 33 percent, followed by Delhi at 16 percent.

Among the list of Bengaluru-based philanthropists, other notable names include Infosys’s Kris Gopalakrishnan and family, Ranjan Pai and family of Manipal Education and Medical, Dilip and Anand Surana of Micro Labs, Infosys co-founders K Dinesh and SD Shibulal along with their families, and Ashok Soota of Happiest Minds Technologies.

The major donors from Bengaluru are identified as follows:

  1. Wipro’s Azim Premji & family, contributing a generous sum of Rs 1,774 crore in donations.
  2. Nandan Nilekani, co-founder of Infosys, donating Rs 189 crore.
  3. Rohini Nilekani, from Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies, making contributions worth Rs 170 crore.
  4. Susmita and Subroto Bagchi from Mindtree, extending support through donations of Rs 110 crore.
  5. Zerodha’s Nithin and Nikhil Kamath, dedicating a sum of Rs 110 crore to organizations addressing climate change and environmental sustainability.

It is noteworthy that Nikhil Kamath, at the age of 37, became the youngest philanthropist to feature on the list.

The Hurun report takes into account cash and cash equivalents committed through legally binding agreements within the period of April 1, 2022, to March 31, 2023, as well as the most recent CSR data submitted to the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
