  • 17 people lost their lives in a massive fire near Charminar; short circuit suspected
  • Firefighters faced difficulty due to poor access and lack of proper equipment
  • Relief efforts are ongoing, with financial aid announced by the Prime Minister’s office

A devastating fire early Saturday morning engulfed a building in Hyderabad's Gulzar House area, near the historic Charminar, leading to the deaths of at least 17 people, including a young child. Many women were among the victims, and several others sustained injuries. Preliminary reports suggest the blaze may have started due to a short circuit, though officials are still investigating the exact cause.

Emergency services were alerted around 6:30 AM, prompting the deployment of 11 fire tenders. Firefighters struggled initially due to inadequate equipment and limited access, as the building reportedly had only a single entry point. A second access route was later made for rescue operations. Many occupants were found unconscious due to the smoke, highlighting the building’s cramped and unsafe design.

The structure, part of a tightly packed cluster of century-old jewelry stores and residences, made fire control efforts more challenging. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Sneha Mehra, the narrow lanes and haphazard constructions significantly delayed the response.

Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy visited the site and spoke to the victims' families. He stressed the need to upgrade fire safety infrastructure and coordination among departments. “I met the family members. Such incidents are very sad... I will talk to the central government and the Prime Minister and try to get financial help for the families of those who died in this incident,” he said.
