Central College Bengaluru, established in 1858, stands as one of India’s oldest and most prestigious educational institutions. Originally affiliated with the University of Mysore during the Mysore State era, the college has played a pivotal role in shaping the educational landscape of Karnataka. Founded by Rev. John Garrett, who also served as its first principal, Central College began its journey as the Central High School before being renamed.

The college’s significance grew over the decades, and with the reorganization of Indian states in 1964 and the formation of Karnataka, Central College was transferred to the newly established Bangalore University in 1965. This transition marked a new chapter in the college’s history, as it became one of the foundational institutions of Bangalore University, alongside the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE). These two colleges formed the nucleus of what would become one of the most prominent universities in the region.
