The series, directed by Anubhav Sinha and released on August 29, revisits the 1999 hijacking of an Indian Airlines flight by the Pakistan-based terror group Harkat-ul-Mujahideen. The show has come under fire for its portrayal of the hijackers, particularly for allegedly altering their names to “Bhola” and “Shankar,” names traditionally linked to Lord Shiva. Critics argue that this modification distorts historical facts and misrepresents the identities of the terrorists, leading to widespread offense among Hindu communities.

The backlash prompted an hour-long meeting between Netflix representatives and government officials, during which the streaming giant was urged to be more sensitive to cultural and religious sentiments in its content. Following the meeting, Netflix India assured the Centre that it would be mindful of these concerns in future projects.

The controversy highlights the increasing scrutiny faced by streaming platforms in India, where content is expected to navigate complex cultural and religious landscapes. Netflix’s commitment marks an effort to avoid further clashes with national sentiments while continuing to produce diverse content.
