The International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering a multi-million dollar fund to boost Test cricket amid rising preference for T20 franchise leagues. The proposed USD 15 million fund, suggested by Cricket Australia (CA) and supported by BCCI secretary Jay Shah and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), aims to enhance the financial stability of Test cricket.

The initiative seeks to increase the minimum match fees for Test players to USD 10,000 and cover the costs of overseas tours for struggling teams, such as the West Indies. This move is designed to address the growing financial disparity between Test cricket and lucrative T20 leagues.

Mike Baird, CA chairman, who introduced the idea in January, emphasized the need to preserve the legacy of Test cricket while adapting to modern demands. "It's fantastic to see momentum behind the Test match fund," Baird said. "We need to eliminate barriers and encourage Test cricket to remain at the pinnacle of the sport."

The fund aims to support national boards and promote the long-format game, ensuring its continued relevance and competitive edge in the global cricketing landscape.
