  • IMD has declared an orange alert for Bengaluru due to expected intense rainfall
  • Urban flooding is a concern due to poor drainage in the concretized city
  • A cyclonic system forming over the Arabian Sea could worsen weather conditions

Bengaluru is bracing for more heavy rain as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an orange alert for the city on Tuesday. The alert follows forecasts predicting significant rainfall, estimated between 8 to 10 cm, which could lead to disruptions in urban areas already struggling with water drainage issues.

Puviarasu, Director of the IMD Bengaluru Centre, emphasized that while such rainfall might be manageable in rural regions, the dense urban layout of Bengaluru, dominated by concrete structures, prevents adequate drainage, leading to frequent waterlogging. The alert has been issued to help civic authorities prepare in advance for any potential impact.

Looking ahead, meteorological observations indicate the formation of a cyclonic circulation over the east-central Arabian Sea, near the Karnataka coastline, expected around May 21. This system is likely to develop into a low-pressure area by May 22 and may intensify while tracking northward. If it strengthens, it could result in increased rainfall and stronger winds in parts of Karnataka, including Bengaluru.

The IMD classifies an orange alert as a warning for very heavy rain, typically ranging from 11 cm to 20 cm. In comparison, a yellow alert indicates moderate to heavy rain between 6 cm and 11 cm. Authorities are urged to stay vigilant and take precautionary steps to minimize the risk of flooding and infrastructure strain.
