The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) uses a colour-coded weather alert system to help the public and authorities understand the severity of upcoming weather events. This system simplifies complex meteorological information into easily understandable alerts and is commonly used for warnings and related to rainfall, thunderstorms, heatwaves, cyclones and other extreme weather conditions.
Here’s what each other colour means:
- Green Alert- No Warning
What it means: Weather is expected to be normal
Purpose: No caution or action is needed
Public Advice: Go about your day as usual; no threat is expected
- Yellow Alert- Be Aware
What it means: Weather conditions may turn tough
Purpose: To keep people informed and cautious about changing conditions
Common triggers: Isolated heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, mild heat waves
Public advice: Stay updates through official weather reports and be alert
- Orange Alert- Be Prepared
What it means: Severe weather is likely in some areas

- Red Alert: Take Action
What it means: Extreme weather is expected; immediate action is necessary
Purpose: To warn of dangerous conditions that could lead to disasters
Common triggers: Extremely heavy rainfall, intense cyclones, severe heat or cold waves
Public advice: Follow emergency instructions. Take all necessary precautions to protect life and property
IMD uses a 4-colour alert system (Green, Yellow, Orange, Red) to indicate weather severity
Green- normal, Yellow-be aware, Orange-be prepared, Red-take action
Alerts help the public and authorities respond to extreme weather events effectively
