Imperial College London is set to launch its international research centre, Imperial Global India, in Bengaluru by May 2025. The initiative aims to strengthen ties in science, education, and innovation between the United Kingdom and India.

The Bengaluru hub will act as a liaison office and foster collaborative research between Imperial and top Indian academic and research institutions. Designed to serve as a platform for co-created scientific initiatives, the centre will also facilitate cross-sectoral partnerships across government, industry, and innovation ecosystems.
This strategic move deepens Imperial’s existing partnerships in India, including its collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and premier institutions such as AIIMS, the IITs (Bombay, Delhi, and Kharagpur), and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. Ongoing joint projects span vital areas like antimicrobial resistance, climate change, and clean energy.
The new hub is also aligned with the UK-India Technology Security Initiative and is expected to contribute to economic growth, sustainability, and societal well-being in both nations.
The initiative will be led by Professor Sanjeev Gupta, an Earth scientist who has worked with IIT Kanpur on river systems and groundwater issues, and Dr Elena Dieckmann, an expert in biomaterials, currently engaged in upcycling waste solar panels with Indian researchers.
This launch complements India’s National Education Policy 2020, which promotes the establishment of global university campuses and research centres within the country.
