In a major escalation along the Line of Control and International Borders, the Indian Army on Thursday night thwarted a large-scale swarm drone attack launched from Pakistan, successfully downing over 50 drones in a swift and coordinated counter-offensive.
The attempted aerial intrusion targeted multiple critical military zones, including Udhampur, Samba, Jammu, Akhnoor, Nagrota, and Pathankot. Indian Air Defence units swiftly responded with a formidable array of anti-drone measures, deploying L-70 anti-aircraft guns, Zu-23mm cannons, and the Schilka weapon system. Additionally, advanced counter-unmanned aerial systems (UAS) were activated to intercept and destroy the incoming drones.
According to defence sources, the swarm attack was part of a broader strategy to target military installations and test India’s aerial response capabilities. However, the Indian Army's prompt action ensured that all aerial threats were neutralised before they could cause any damage or breach critical infrastructure.
This marks one of the largest drone neutralisation operations in the region in recent months and highlights the growing use of unmanned aerial threats in cross-border hostilities. Authorities have since intensified surveillance along sensitive sectors, with a high-alert status maintained across northern command zones.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the origin and exact nature of the drones, as India strengthens its air defence readiness amidst rising tensions with Pakistan.
Security agencies are also assessing the need for further upgrades to counter-drone protocols to prevent future incursions.
