In an alarming and concerning development in Karnataka, the state is witnessing a huge surge in the number of teenage pregnancies across districts in Karnataka.

The concerned departments that were passing the blame on other departments as its responsibilities have now come forward to act and take measures on this worrying development in the state.

The health department along with police department and human rights commission have planned to hold meetings on this issue in various districts across Karnataka. The departments are also planning to initiate awareness programmes on this issue to control and prevent teenage pregnancies in the state.

According to RTI sources, there are over 45,557 teenage pregnant women in the state. The number of teenage pregnancies' went up from 10,101 in 2020 to 13,159 in 2021. These numbers are even more alarming when compared to 2022. These numbers went up to 19,561 teenage pregnancies in 2022. From January to June in 2023, 2,736 teenage pregnancies were reported across the state.

In the last three years between January 2020 to June 2023, the total number of teenage pregnancies stand at an alarming 45,557.

Pregnancy among teenagers affects their well-being and life and leads to discontinuation of their education. This also affects their health due to malnutrition among teenage mothers and their children.
