An innovative learning centre designed exclusively for homeschooling families is set to open this August in Nelamangala, on the outskirts of Bengaluru. The space, called Shallaki—named after a medicinal herb—is being developed as a free, collaborative hub for alternative education.

The initiative is spearheaded by entrepreneur Hari Prasad Nadig and his wife, Suma Addoor, who homeschool their two daughters. Their approach, rooted in unschooling, emphasizes self-directed learning over conventional curriculums. The family’s experience inspired the idea of a shared space where like-minded families could connect and learn together.

Initially, Shallaki will accommodate four to five families. The centre will feature an impressive collection of nearly 9,000 books, spanning subjects such as science, technology, Kannada literature, world languages, and DIY manuals. Designed to foster curiosity and creativity, the space will also support practical, hands-on activities.

Children will be able to explore a wide range of experiences, from gardening and robotics to pottery, natural dye-making, and traditional cooking using eco-friendly methods. The aim is to combine intellectual and physical engagement in a nurturing environment.

Weekdays will be reserved for homeschooling families, while weekends will host students from mainstream schools for curated workshops in origami, STEM, and nature-based learning.

With a focus on building a connected, experiential learning community, Shallaki hopes to serve as a pioneering model for inclusive, mindful education beyond the traditional classroom.
