In a significant step toward modernising its naval combat capabilities, India has approved a government-to-government deal with France for the purchase of 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets. Valued at over Rs 63,000 crore, the deal is set to be formalised in the coming weeks, defence sources revealed on Wednesday.

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light for the procurement. The Indian Navy will receive 22 single-seater and four twin-seater variants, along with a comprehensive support package covering fleet maintenance, personnel training, logistical backup, and offset obligations to boost domestic manufacturing.

Designed for aircraft carrier operations, the Rafale Marine jets are set to replace the ageing MiG-29K fleet and will be deployed on India's two carriers — INS Vikramaditya and the indigenously built INS Vikrant. These aircraft, equipped with advanced avionics, weapons systems, and STOBAR capabilities, are expected to significantly enhance the Navy’s air strike and surveillance potential.

Deliveries are slated to begin by late 2029, with full induction anticipated by 2031. The inter-governmental route ensures faster timelines and dependable maintenance support from Dassault Aviation.

In a parallel move, India will also build three more Scorpene-class submarines under Project-75 in collaboration with France’s Naval Group and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, further strengthening its underwater warfare capabilities.
