India suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the third Test at Lord’s, falling short by just 22 runs while chasing a modest target of 193 against England. The loss gave England a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.
After bowling England out for 192 in their second innings, the Shubman Gill-led Indian side was expected to chase down the total comfortably. However, a collective batting failure saw India bowled out for 170, with not a single batter crossing 40 runs.

The collapse began early with opener Yashasvi Jaiswal departing for a duck. Skipper Gill managed only 6, and keeper-batter Rishabh Pant was clean bowled for 9, crushing hopes of a middle-order recovery. Karnataka’s Karun Nair (14) failed yet again, while KL Rahul battled valiantly but fell short on 39. Akash Deep added just 1 run, and Washington Sundar also fell for a duck, deepening the crisis.
Only Ravindra Jadeja stood firm with a fighting 61 not out, but received no support from the other end. England's disciplined bowling attack capitalised on the lack of partnerships and wrapped up the innings on the final day.
Earlier in the match, both teams had posted identical first innings scores of 387, leading to a rare tie. England’s poor second innings total seemed to hand India the advantage, but the visiting side squandered the opportunity.
With this dramatic win, England now lead the series 2-1 heading into the fourth Test.
