In a strong diplomatic and operational response to the recent terrorist attack in Jammu & Kashmir’s Pahalgam region, the Indian government has announced the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty engagements and closed the Attari land checkpost for Pakistani nationals. The move signals a sharp escalation in India’s stance following the attack, which claimed the lives of over 26 tourists.

Sources in the Ministry of External Affairs confirmed through press conference that all routine communication and cooperation related to the Indus Water Treaty — a longstanding water-sharing agreement between India and Pakistan brokered by the World Bank — have been halted until further notice. The decision aims to exert strategic pressure on Pakistan, which India holds responsible for supporting cross-border terrorism.

Additionally, the Attari-Wagah land border crossing, the only road route for regular civilian movement between the two countries, has been shut for Pakistani citizens. Officials have stated that no Pakistani nationals will be allowed entry into India through this route in the immediate future.

This twin-pronged measure marks one of the most serious retaliatory steps taken by India in recent years in response to a terror strike. Security has also been heightened along the international border, and high-level reviews of diplomatic ties and trade routes are reportedly underway.

New Delhi has reiterated that while it seeks peace, any act of terrorism will meet with firm and immediate countermeasures.
