In a decisive move following the terror attack in Pahalgam, India has imposed a complete ban on the direct and indirect import of goods from Pakistan, alongside barring Pakistani-flagged ships from docking at any Indian ports. The action marks a significant escalation in trade and maritime restrictions in response to security concerns.

The Ministry of Commerce issued a notification under the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP), introducing a new clause that prohibits the import or transit of any goods originating from or exported by Pakistan, either directly or via third countries. While direct imports from Pakistan have been limited for years, certain goods had continued to reach Indian markets through indirect routes, often through intermediary nations.
In a parallel development, the Directorate General of Shipping has enforced a maritime ban, stating that no vessel flying the Pakistani flag will be permitted to enter Indian ports. The measure is intended to safeguard Indian shipping operations, infrastructure, and cargo movement in the wake of renewed hostilities.
These coordinated bans reflect India’s hardened stance on cross-border terrorism and aim to increase pressure on Pakistan by cutting off remaining trade and logistical ties. The sweeping measures are likely to have limited commercial impact but carry strong diplomatic and strategic messaging as tensions continue to rise following the Pahalgam incident.
