In a significant step toward enhancing location accuracy and service delivery, the Department of Posts has introduced DIGIPIN, a 10-character alphanumeric digital code system developed in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC). Unlike traditional PIN codes that cover large geographical areas, DIGIPIN identifies precise locations within a 4x4 metre grid.

DIGIPIN serves as a digital overlay to existing postal addresses and enables users to generate a unique code for their property by selecting their exact location on a digital map through the official India Post portal. This innovation is particularly valuable for rural, remote, and informal settlements that lack structured addressing systems.

Designed with inclusivity and practicality in mind, DIGIPIN supports offline functionality through open-source logic and does not store personal data, ensuring privacy. It is expected to significantly enhance logistics operations, emergency services, and digital access by minimizing errors in location identification.

The new system is set to streamline e-commerce deliveries, public service outreach, and crisis response mechanisms by improving geographic precision. By bridging the address gap in underserved areas, DIGIPIN aligns with India’s broader push for digital transformation and inclusive infrastructure.

DIGIPIN is now accessible nationwide, promising to redefine how locations are identified and navigated in the country’s diverse and complex geographic landscape.
