The alarming figures were compiled from various States and Union Territories and indicate a significant public health concern, especially in urban areas where the stray dog population is high. Alongside the massive number of dog bite cases, 54 deaths due to suspected human rabies were also recorded in the same year.
The report further highlighted the government's efforts to control rabies through the Assistance to States for Control of Animal Diseases (ASCAD) scheme. This includes financial support for procuring anti-rabies vaccines, especially targeting stray dog immunization.
Images of dog attacks and rising cases have sparked concern among citizens, with calls growing louder for stricter implementation of animal control measures.
