India recorded 269 fresh Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, pushing the total active caseload to 7,400, according to data released by the Union Health Ministry on Saturday. The daily death toll stood at nine, with four fatalities reported in Maharashtra, three in Kerala, and one each in Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.

Karnataka reported the highest single-day increase with 132 new active cases. Gujarat followed with 79 cases, while Kerala added 54 and Madhya Pradesh 20. Slight increases were also seen in Sikkim (11), Tamil Nadu (12), and Haryana (9). Several regions, including Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Ladakh, Mizoram, Punjab, and West Bengal, did not report any new cases during this period.
Kerala continues to be the worst-hit state with 2,109 active cases, followed by Gujarat (1,437) and Delhi (672). Other states with notable active cases include Maharashtra (613), Karnataka (527), Uttar Pradesh (248), Tamil Nadu (232), Rajasthan (180), and Andhra Pradesh (102).
Meanwhile, 991 recoveries were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the cumulative recoveries to 11,967. As of January 1, 2025, the total number of Covid-related deaths in the current phase stands at 87.
A day earlier, on Friday, India had registered 33 new cases and three deaths, bringing the active tally to 7,154 at that time.
