Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent two-day official visit to the Maldives has resulted in a significant enhancement of bilateral cooperation between the two nations. A central announcement was the extension of a Rs 4,850 crore Line of Credit (LoC) from India to fund vital infrastructure and development projects across the island nation. This initiative also included a revised agreement to ease Maldives’ financial burden by lowering repayments on prior Indian loans.

A major breakthrough came in the form of launching formal negotiations for the India-Maldives Free Trade Agreement (IMFTA), aimed at amplifying economic and commercial collaboration. In a move to deepen bilateral exchanges, both countries issued a commemorative stamp celebrating 60 years of diplomatic relations.

A slew of MoUs were signed covering diverse sectors including fisheries, meteorological science, digital governance, and pharmaceutical trade. Notably, India’s digital payment ecosystem got a push as the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is set to be integrated with the Maldives’ financial systems through a partnership between NPCI International and the Maldivian central bank.

India further reaffirmed its commitment to grassroots progress by initiating six High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDPs), alongside the delivery of 72 vehicles and equipment to enhance the Maldives’ defence capabilities.
