  • India would have to register a new domain name
  • Rebranding cost estimated to be Rs 8936 crore
  • Anurag Thakur has dismissed allegations as rumours

When the congress-led alliance, previously called the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) rechristened themselves as the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) many from the supporters of the government had attempted to portray the political battle as between that of INDIA and BHARAT. It was assumed that this was merely a battle of words but it has now extended beyond that. The G-20 dinner invite to the nations was sent by the Republic of Bharat instead of Republic of India which was the standard practice. There are speculations that renaming the nation as Bharat would take place in the upcoming session in the parliament.

Here are the possible factors that might face immediate consequences.

Sites with registered domain as .in

Domain names for countries are generally 2-lettered. If India were to be named as Bharat the possible domain names would have to be .bh, .bt or .br but these have been acquired by Bahrain, Bhutan and Brazil respectively. India would either have to request these countries for the top layer domain or go for an extended domain name.

Rs 5364 crore is estimated to be the cost of marketing for this change and the cost of rebranding is itself speculated to cost Rs 8936 crore.

Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Anurag Thakur has however dismissed the allegations of renaming by the opposition parties as rumours.
