Indian Army constructs Bailey Bridge overnight for Wayanad rescue operations

Demonstrating swift and efficient response, a team from the Madras Engineer Group, known as the Madras Sappers, constructed a Class 24 Bailey Bridge overnight, establishing a crucial link between Chooralmala and Mundakkai. This rapid construction is part of the extensive rescue operations underway in Wayanad, Kerala, following devastating landslides and flooding.

Six Indian Army relief columns, medical teams, dog squads, and an engineer task force have commenced search and rescue operations in the affected areas of Attamala, Mundakkai, and Chooralmala. The improvised 100-feet footbridge using Bailey Bridge panels has facilitated the quick evacuation of stranded individuals and enabled the transport of engineering equipment to other inaccessible areas.

The deployment of technical equipment for remote sensing has been pivotal in identifying those trapped under debris, enhancing the efficiency of the rescue missions. In addition, five cranes have been positioned on the west side of the stream to clear silt and debris, significantly aiding in the search for more survivors or victims.

The efforts by the Indian Army, particularly the Madras Sappers, have provided a lifeline to the affected regions, demonstrating exemplary coordination and speed in crisis management. The ongoing operations continue to focus on rescuing those trapped, providing medical aid, and restoring connectivity to the devastated areas of Wayanad.
